Welcome to the 2015-16 School Year at CRMS

Dear Coast Redwood Middle School Families,

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year!  I hope you all have had a fun and relaxing summer and are excited about a new year of homeschooling together.  I am excited to be working with you all this year and am looking forward to our CRMS parent orientation meeting next Monday, August 24 from 10am-12pm. It is very important that everyone attend this meeting to orient to the year, sign up for individual meetings, sign up for parent help days, decide on a record keeping format, and pick up resource materials and benchmark assessments on this first day of school.   We will dive deeper into specific curriculum for your child at our individual meeting in the weeks to follow, but after our group meeting next Monday you should have enough to get started.

Please plan to arrive at the meeting on time --the two hours will go fast!  You may want to arrive a bit early in case you need to park in the church parking lot down Hacienda Street and walk over.  The middle school parking lot is small and often fills just with staff vehicles. If you arrive before 10am, you’ll find me in the classroom.  For those new to the site, walk through (around) the yellow gate at the far end of the parking lot.  There will be two portable buildings on your right.  The CRMS classroom is the second portable.

If we are not in the classroom you will find us on the soccer field which is upstairs from the parking lot.  My longtime colleague, JT Osgood has again agreed to provide childcare for us, playing field games with the kids during our meeting.  I am tremendously grateful that JT will be there to facilitate fun games for the kids while the grown-ups talk “business”.  JT is a seasoned teacher, having worked with homeschoolers for decades.  I’d like to compensate JT for his time.  I will have a donation basket in the classroom for this purpose.  Please consider chipping in $5 or more, if you can.

As you begin to plan your school year, here are some dates to remember.  Soon you will also receive a SLV Charter School Newsletter which will include dates for activities for families in all the our charter programs.  You are invited (and encouraged) to attend all All-Charter Events.

*Monday, August 24: Parent orientation meeting at the CRMS classroom from 10am-12pm.  Official first day of homeschooling and record keeping.  Please bring your calendars to the meeting so you can sign up for meetings and parent help days as well as fill out permission slips for the ropes course.  If you have a laptop computer or tablet you think you might like to use for record-keeping, please bring it with you.  If not, please bring the username and password needed to sign in to your email account using one of our desktop computers.  I will leave some time at the end of the meeting so those of you who are interested can walk through using the online planner and logging in to your child’s math benchmark so you feel comfortable doing this things before you leave.

*Wednesday, September 23: Coast Redwood Middle School classes begin, 9:30am-2:00pm, Weds & Thurs.

Wednesday, September 30: Ropes Course at Mt. Hermon Conference Center.  We will have normal class hours that day (9:30-2:00pm), but pick-up and drop-off will be at the conference center.  I’ll have permission slips and waivers at the parent orientation meeting.  The ropes course cost is $40 per participant.  Fortunately last spring, Charter School parents voted to allocate $500 of school raised funds to support our ropes course this year!   Gratefully, that will bring the cost down to $20 per student.  If you can, please bring your payment to the meeting next Monday.

CRMS does have a scholarship account supported by parent-raised (and student-raised) funds. We want all CRMS students to participate in all CRMS activities, regardless of ability to pay.  If you need a scholarship, or partial scholarship for any activity, please don’t be shy about letting me know.  For every field trip there will be a place to request a scholarship on the permission slip.

*Saturday, October 10, 2:00pm - Monday, October 12, 11:00am: CRMS Family Campout at Little Basin Campground, 21700 Little Basin Rd., Boulder Creek.  This will be a whole family campout…I hope you all can make it!  There will be some activities just for CRMS students, but most will be open to everyone.  If you cannot make it, but your child can, that’s fine.   In that case, connect with another parent in the class who will be attending and arrange with them for your child to join their family for the weekend.  I am gathering up the costs for the trip now and should be able to give you an amount soon.  There will be a sheet at the meeting on Monday for you to write down if you think you can make it and how many family members you expect to attend.  The price is dependent on the number of campers we have.  We need to confirm our numbers with Little Basin and pay our balance in early September.

*For long-term planning…Trip to Headwaters Outdoor School in Mt. Shasta, Monday-Friday, May 2-6, 2016.  Parents do not need to (though are welcome to) accompany CRMS students on this trip.  Siblings stay home for this one.

I look forward to seeing you next Monday!
