CRMS Update for 1/5/16

posted Jan 11, 2016, 4:08 PM by Marcy Reynolds

Dear CRMS Families,

I hope that you all have had a relaxing and refreshing holiday break!  I was lucky enough to meet with several families today to celebrate first semester achievements and to envision second semester.  I am looking forward to my meetings with every one of you.  It is great time of year to take a pause and set fresh intentions.

A couple of nights ago I rented and watched the movie, “On the Way to School” (trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIsQ0B43Q9Y).  If you child has patience enough for a slower moving film with subtitles, s/he might find it to be a great kick off to the new semester; I did.

Below is information that you’ll want to know to help plan the weeks ahead.  There may be no classes at CRMS this month, but there is still a lot going on!  I will send updates as I get them.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Winter Break: 12/21/15-1/4/16

Homeschooling/Semester Planning Meetings/No Classes: 1/5/16-1/29/16

Non-Instructional Days (no need to keep records): 1/4, 1/18, 1/29/16

CRMS Classes Begin Again: 2/3/16

Parent Education: Using Manipulatives with the Moving with Math (Foundations) curriculum.  Date: This month TBA.

Science Fair Brainstorming: Wednesday, January 6, 11am-12pm at the Quail Hollow Campus.  Want to participate in the school science fair, but need help figuring out what to do?  Show up to this brainstorming session.

Capture the Flag: Monday, January 11, 10:30am-12:30pm at Quail Hollow Ranch.  Super fun!  Come rain or shine.

After School Sports: Wrestling begins Monday, Jan. 11 at 5pm in the high school wrestling room.  Girls Volleyball will likely start on Wednesday, Jan. 13.  Mr. Coulson will send the details when they have been decided and I will pass them on to you.

Exploratorium Field Trip: Tuesday, January 12, 12:15pm-You Choose.  Because of all the neat Physics-based and Earth Science-related exhibits I was thinking about arranging a trip for CRMS this year, but then I thought, “why not do it in January and invite all charter families?”  so that is what I did.  Please see details below.  Rain is predicted.  Please allow extra driving time to accommodate the rain.

Ukulele Club: Jan. 14 & Jan. 28, 2:15-3:00pm.  I think meeting every other week will allow the kids to keep up momentum.  This will be a student-led club.  The kids will decide what they want to do and support each other in making it happen.  I (or a parent) will be available to support group process, if requested.

Teen Movie/Game Night (Please Note Date Change): Tuesday, January 19, 6-8:30pm in Room 14 at the Quail Hollow Homeschool Site.  Hosted by Amber Walker and Marcy.  All charter middle and high school students are invited.

Math Tutoring: Starting Wednesday, January 20, 2:15-4:00pm.  Aaron is looking forward to supporting you with Math.

Book Club: Next Meeting Thursday, January 21, 2:15-3:15pm.  This month’s book is: Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey

Month 5 Attendance Paperwork Due: Friday, January 22.  Please turn in paperwork to the Charter Office in Ben Lomond.  Here’s the link to the attendance ledger: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=c2x2dXNkLm9yZ3xjaGFydGVyMXxneDo1MTg1Yjc0NmJkMjYyZWM0

Semester 2 Planning Meetings, All Month: Attached to this email is a copy of the up-to-date semester planning meeting schedule.  Please note that Friday, 1/8 is on the second page.  If you haven’t signed up yet, please look at the open dates/times and send me an email about when you would like to meet.  Please bring your calendar to sign up for parent-help days in class.

Wish List:

*A parent to be present for the meeting of the Ukulele Club on 1/14 while I am involved in semester planning meetings.

Exploratorium Trip:

Dear SLV Charter Homeschooling Families,

Next Tuesday, 1/12, I am offering a field trip to the Exploratorium for all SLV Charter School homeschool families who would like to participate.  We will meet in front of the Exploratorium at 12:15pm where we will participate in a 10-15 minute orientation by the museum staff.  After the orientation we will be free to explore the exhibits on our own for as long as we’d like.

The cost will be $7.50 per student (4-17 years old) and $10 per adult.  Children under 4 years old are admitted free.  We will all need to enter at the same time to receive the discounted rate.  The Charter Family Booster Club fund does have a scholarship fund to help support field trips.  If you would like to participate in the field trip, but cannot afford the fees, please don’t feel shy about making a scholarship request (on the attached permission slip).

If you would like to participate in the trip, please fill out at permission slip and bring it and the entry fees with you next Tuesday.  I will collect all the forms and fees in front of the museum before our orientation.

The Exploratorium staff recommend that we park at Levi's Plaza Garage located at 1453 Sansome Street because they accept validation from the museum.  With museum validation parking will cost $10 for up to 4 hours.  Please allow at least 20 minutes to park your car and walk from the garage to the museum.  Plan for arriving at the garage by 11:55am.

I’m looking forward to an afternoon of Science-y exploration with whoever can make it!
